Julie was the person I saw at Writer's Week and for the most part it really set the tone for the whole week. I really enjoying listening to Julie. She was creative, witty, and relatable. I especially liked that she seemed excited to be at Fremd sharing her stories and the job she loves. After seeing Julie, I really wanted to read her books because I liked her in person so I figured that her books must have some part of her humor and charm inside them.
Tuesday: Student presenters
I always enjoy watching the students, even if they aren't fantastic because it demonstrates that anything can write and be a part of Writer's Week. Only two of them stood out to me, Unser and Jonathan. Jonathan's piece was quirky and fun. I enjoyed listening to his stories about the bird lady and all the other characters he has met on planes. It was a really creative topic, and when it was over I really wished it could've kept going! It made me see how you could make a story out of anything. He was just a very good presenter overall. Unser's speech was just so funny. I didn't think it was immature, after all, everyone knew it was a joke and all in good fun. If people were upset by it, I think they probably just don't really enjoy that kind of humor. I always liked Tamar's piece quite a bit. It was unflinchingly honest, and I felt like everyone can relate to a story like that.
Wednesday: Sierra DeMulder
I loved listening to Sierra! I can see why she is such a well-ranked slam poet; her words were powerful and resonating. She talked about a lot of tough issues; anorexia, love, hate crimes, etc. Even though these are very serious things, she still managed to be very funny and real in between her poems. Listening to her made me think about words, how they can mean things, change how people think, and really affect lives.
Thursday: Students
I missed Thursday due to a doctor's appointment, which I was very sad about. :( From the sounds of what people have told me, and what I've on the blog, everyone was really good and fun.
Friday: Billy Lombardo
I have to say, Billy was probably my least favorite presenter. He seemed nice enough and was occasionally funny, but I didn't really relate to his stories at all. Just not really my style. I liked his non-baseball stories a lot more than the other baseball ones though. The baseball ones to me were just... dull. His writing was fine. I just couldn't get excited about any of his stories and he wasn't the greatest presenter, even though I know that's not the point.
Overall, I really enjoyed Writer's Week this year. I just wish we got to stay there the whole day! For some reason, my appreciation of Writer's Week this year was a lot better than last year. I saw many fantastic people, some of my favorites being Mark Buenning, Sierra DeMulder, Daphne Willis, and Julie Halpern. Seeing all these writers talk about all the hard work and effort they put into their work seems like a daunting task, but one well worth the effort. Writer's Week has taught me that anyone can be a writer, no matter what anyone thinks.
