Tuesday: Jonathan Stoller-Schoff was actually one of my favorite performers overall. His story was light, incredibly funny, and written in a very smoothly flowing way. Along with that, because he is a performer, he performed it very well. It actually reminded me a lot of David Sedaris's writing, as he writes short humorous stories about his life. Unser Ahmed, although he is funny, is not one of my favorite performers. His SOS, the speech we saw, is kind of off putting for me. I know if I was an audience member and he had called my name out, I would not have taken it lightly. Being put on the spot like that isn't fun, regardless of whether or not you're friends with him.
Wednesday: Sierra DeMulder is a very good performer, there is no question about that. Though, she seemed to very quickly cover a lot of heavy topics. In a matter of less than an hour she went over school shootings, murder, gay rights, anorexia/bulimia, cancer, and various other things. That's a lot to take in. Like I said, she performed very well, though it would have been nice to see her do a lighter poem, maybe something funny or well...anything lighter would do. Her poem about Jeffry Dahmer was definitely my favorite. It's very interesting that she even thought to write in the perspective of his mother, because as she said "everyone has a mother".
Thursday: This was kind of an off day to me. Hannah Fox had a very nice voice, although her songs threw me off a little. Deena was good, considering the few mistakes she made. Davy and Dan really threw me off. This is simply a personal opinion, but I fully believe that Eminem is the only black white person. That's not politically correct, but basically, I find it extremely hard to take caucasian rappers seriously. Maggie was good, although it was nothing too special in my eyes. Hannah. Hannah Lee really shined here. I swear, that girl is good at everything she does. She a fantastic singer, and her OC is definitely one of the funniest ones I've ever seen. I'm actually kind of disappointed that the rest of the auditorium has never seen her full piece.
Friday: At the beginning I was very weary of Billy, much like Julie on the first day. Honestly, the only thing that kept my attention to begin with was his accent. I'm a fan of baseball, don't get me wrong, but I can only listen to stories about it for so long. I think he had a nice sense of humor, but at times it seemed he forgot that we were high schoolers and treated us as though we were in grade school. But towards the end I think his writing got more interesting. I liked hearing about his old neighborhood and listening to him answer the audiences questions.
Really, Writers Week just reminds me of all the talent was have in our school, and well, our world I suppose. Besides the people we saw during fourth period, I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the lovely Becca Tham and Lizzy Jamnik. Also, Mark Buenning was very interesting to hear. It was nice to see someone go up there and endorse speech team. But overall, what I got out of it is that I can be a writer. When I was younger I had this deep lingering desire to be one and it died as I got older and my parents repetitively told me that writers don't make enough money. But watching these people talk about their writing and get up there and perform can be rather inspiring. Also, I'm definitely going to apply next year. Definitely.
