Writers Week XVII

Monday :Julie Halpern
Out of all the writers we saw, I think that Julie stood out the most and that was one of the reasons I liked her most. As writers in progress, we have all heard "write what you know"and during her presentation, Julie explains in great detail the importance of this. As a teenager she wrote zines and I liked the fact that even though she had troubles as a child, she was so open about it. Her outgoing personality was able to get the audience excited and her advice was very helpful. She said to stay true to yourself when writing. I really liked this idea because even if you can write something that can sell, if you're not liking what you write, there wouldn't really get anything from it.

Tuesday: Student Presenters
Tuesday had its ups and downs, but overall I believed that they did a very good job. My favorite two of the day was Unser and Jonathan. Jonathan's story of the bird lady was really funny because although it sounded almost absurd, things like that actually happen in life. When he was telling, you could really pick up his persona and what he thought not only because of what he was saying, but what he was saying about the passengers around him. I thought that Unser's skit was hilarious and he was a real attention getter. I thought that the topic was an interesting one, but his optimistic attitude attributed to why it was so appealing to the audience. Although she was not my favorite, I thought Colleen did a fantastic job. Her poems reflected what she wanted to say about VAMP and her best friend, her mom, and I think that was the reason why it stood out from the other poets.

Wednesday: Sierra DeMulder
If I could describe Sierra with one word it would definitely be AWESOME. I saw her for the first time last year, and when I heard I was going to see her again I was excited. Sierra is such a down to earth person and she definitely speaks her mind. Although she has a upbeat personality, when she reads her poems, they are very intense and you can feel how passionate she is about what she writes about. The topics that she chooses to write about are all controversial and I think when she read them, she does a good job letting you know her opinions were on them.

Thursday: Student Presenters
Wow! As someone who was a singer/songwriter before, I know how hard it is to not only to write the lyrics, but to actually turn it in to a song. I really enjoyed Deena and Maggie's performances because they were really entertaining and their lyrics let the audience know that they wanted to say. Deena had hurt her finger, but I loved how she didn't let that get her down. The two rappers were not to my liking, but I'm glad that they tried to do something different. My favorite of the day was Hannah Lee. Both her voice and her song were spectacular. You could really feel her enthusiasm as she sang. I really enjoyed her O.C as well. It really got the audience laughing and it was a great way to end the day.

Friday: Billy Lombardo
Although he was not my favorite, I think that Billy was a great addition to Writers Week. He definitely wrote about what he knew and I liked the fact that he had such great morals. This was seen through his love of his child. Through his reading, you could see his passion for baseball. Although he didn't seem like the best public speaker, I thought that he was trying his best which was admirable.

Writers Week this year was fantastic. This year I was able to learn a lot from a wide range of writers. From Julie, I learned to stay true to myself when writing. Sierra taught me to be bold about my writing and just get it out there. Billy reminded me to write about what you know and when you can't think of anything, write about your most memorable experiences. I thought that this was a good learning experience and was glad that I could also see my peers expressing themselves on stage.
