Too Bad It's Already Over

Ahh, Writers Week. It's that one week of the school year where listening to people talk about their work is really enjoyable. I have to say that I enjoyed this year's Writers Week better than last year's. Although it is probably only because I actually appreciate what it is now, I still think that the presenters this year were amazing and could connect with the audience really well. It'll be fun to see if it can be topped next year.

Monday- Julie Halpern was the only presenter today and I found her absolutely fascinating. She appeared very down-to-earth when she spoke and knew how to effectively communicate with the audience. I liked hearing about the insprirations for her books, especially the one about her experience in a mental hospital and the one about her runaway friends. I'm not going to lie, listening to her speak really made me consider picking up one of her books for spring break.

Tuesday- It was all about the students today, and I thought each of them brought a unique style to the stage. My favorite was probably Jonathan Stoller-Schoff, whose bird lady story made me quietly laugh. I love those random, quirky life moments because they are never fogotten. The other performers were good too (Unser Ahmed's comedic piece was my second favorite), but none of their pieces really stood out to me personally as much as Jonathan's.

Wednesday- Sierra DeMulder was completely different than I expected. I saw this tiny girl in glasses onstage but I heard mature, emotional poetry coming out of her mouth. I loved that her topics drew from the creepy, the everyday happiness, and the downtrodden people in this world. One word can pretty much sum up what I think of her: WOW!

Thursday-I didn't really know what to expect from music day, so I went in without any expectations. I would say most of the music was good, but no one realy blew me away like the other days. I saw a lot of talent up there, especially those who played instruments, but what they performed didn't quite match up with my tastes, and that's OK. I feel bad saying this on music day, but my favorite part was when Hannah Lee started to do her original comedy. What can I say, I love to laugh.

Friday- I can't decide if I liked or did not like Billy Lombardo. I liked listening to him read his work because I liked his style and topics, but he rambled a bit and went off on tangents not related to his original train of thought. My favorite piece was his poem "Poem to Leonard" because it addressed alot of world issues but was personal at the same time. I think I'll stay in the middle for this one, and pass my final judgement when I look back on this week later.

So those are the people I saw during fourth period. I was very fortunate to see Mary Fons on Monday and I loved her zaniness, but other than that I would say I'm pretty lucky to have English fourth period.
