Yeah, Writer's Week!
Day 1: Julie Halpern. I really liked her. She seemed very passionate about her writing. I thought her story about her zine was pretty interesting. I also liked that she used her own experiences to write about.
Day 2: Students. To start off, I really liked Tamar. I found her writing to be interesting and relateable. Next was Nakendra. I found her poems to be shorter, but still just as meaningful as the others. They were very personal, which was nice. After Nakendra, there was Colleen. I liked that she was descriptince. Then there was Jonathan, he was really entertaining. The bird lady story was a funny and he got me interested. After Jonathan was Alaina and her princess story, it reminded me of my childhood, which was nice. Finally was my absolute favorite of the day, Unser. He was truly hilarious and extremely enjoyable, while still saying something important.
Day 3: Sierra DeMulder. Sierra was my favorite presenter as a whole. She seems really cool. I likes her physicality on stage. I also found her works to be strong, meaningful, passionate, and overall well-presented. She talked about rather controversial topics in a very tasteful way, which can be really challenging. I related to her the most out of every presenter.
Day 4: Students. I liked this day for the most part. First off was Hanna Fox. I felt like she was very good at translating emotion and writing into music. Next was Davy Mellado. He was a good entertainer. I'm really not a fan of rap, but his lyrics were powerful and he was good at performing, so I enjoyed it. Next was Daniel. I appreciated his song, but I didn't really like it that much. The lyrics were nice though. After that was Deena Bishop. She had a really artsy quality to her and I enjoyed her performance, especially that she played piano with a broken finger and still managed to sound good. Next was Maggie Dever. She was really genuine with her songs and they had good messages in them, I really enjoyed her performance. Finally was my favorite of the day, Hanna Lee. Her music was really bluesy and her vocals were gravelly yet warm at the same time. She had really good stage presence, and she was funny.
Day 5: Billy Lombardo. Unfortunately, I must say that he was my least favorite presenter. I appreciated his work, and I could relate to the stories about baseball, but the way he presented kind of took away from it. I couldn't seem to get into it.
Overall, I got a lot out of Writer's Week. It gave me a new-found appreciation of writers and their work. When we're in class, I often don't think about the author, just how much I like/dislike the book. This shows me that there's more to authors than a good story. There's a reason that they write what they write, and Writer's Week made that really clear to me this year. It also shows us that authors are normal people like you and me, not just English obsessives that churn out books like a production factory. Writer's Week also showed me that there's some meaning behind every piece of writing. Overall, Writer's Week was a really good experience.
