Catcher in the Rye: I didn’t care for the book that much. I understand why people would like it because of the personification of Holden. Yes, I do agree with the fact that J.D. Salinger did do a good job with the character of Holden but I didn’t care for the plot line. It seemed to me that it was another story about the rebellious youth and how conforming is against what teenagers think. I have read stories like this before and they all basically have the same idea of the youth rebelling and caring about themselves and I feel that this story is like that minus the fact that Holden cares about Phoebe.
First They Killed My Father: I enjoyed this book tremendously. I have always been fascinated about genocide and how one person can overtake a whole country. So when I found out we were reading about the Cambodian genocide, I was very excited. I was also happy to know that we weren’t going to read about the Holocaust because I feel most genocide books we read in class are about the Holocaust. Even though other genocides are smaller, they deserve recognition. In the book, I really liked how she puts in italics what she imagines are happening to her family as they die. I liked that because it gives the reader a closer look into her thoughts and because most people will already try to think of what happened; now they can know what the author thinks.
Inherit the Wind: I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked the message it sends about the difference between society’s thoughts and the thoughts of an individual person. It did a very good job at showing how a society can all think alike because of the teachings of the town. Also how one person can come in and express one idea and the whole town freaks out and there is a nationwide trial over a new idea. Another thing that I liked about the novel was that is stayed to about the exact same story line as the true story it was based on. There is something about the story that I didn’t like but I can’t put my finger on it. It maybe the fact that it was based on a true story and it was a little dry and boring. I’m not quite sure but it wasn’t my favorite book we read this year.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream: I really liked this play. I found it really funny that the potions could do all that. It was absurd that a queen could fall in love with a donkey but it was hilarious. I also found it funny that the four lovers were in a twisted love relationship. It was very funny to think that people could think like that but to be honest, that could happen to anyone today. I also liked the book because it still relates to the present day. No, I do not mean that the love potion and the guy being a donkey but the fact that it shows how love is twisted and blind.
My Antonia: I did not like My Antonia at all. I thought that it was very slow and didn’t have a climax and it was just average. If I didn’t have to read it for English, I would have put it down and stop reading it after the first book. Jim’s life had nothing exciting about it and it was like he was going through the motions of life. Nothing interesting or climatic happened which disappointed me because Willla Cather could have made the book so interesting. I understand that it was a very long time ago and people didn’t think like we do today, but I still think that Cather could of added at least one interesting section of the book.
