lo que pienso

First semester, we read some really good books that I enjoyed. I really enjoyed A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Catcher in the Rye. I also liked First They Killed My Father, I can't say that i really enjoyed reading it, because it was a depressing book. Inherit the Wind and My Antonia were good books, but I didn't necessarily like reading these.

I think Inherit the Wind was a good play, but reading it wasn't really enjoyable for me, because I didn't really like the plot of the story. For me, I just don't really like stories about court cases. But this play had really good themes, and like Karen said, it also got me thinking about the right to think. The story also reminded me about how different people have different religions.

My Antonia... I thought this book was a little on the boring side. While I was reading the book, I kept waiting for a climax and for something interesting to happen. But there was no real climax, and the story just went on and on about childhood and Jim's life. I partly didn't like the story, because Jim always had feelings for Antonia, but she never saw him as anything more, so I felt bad for Jim.

My opinion on The Catcher in the Rye is different than some of the people that have blogged before me. Many people said that they didn't like the book, but I actually really enjoyed reading this book. What made me like the book was the fact that it was a snobby teenager that narrated the story, and for some things he said, I could partly relate to. But one thing that kind of pissed me off while I was reading this was how every time Holden told a story, his train of thought kept changing, and the story jumped around all over the place. I think the plot of this story was a little more interesting than My Antonia and Inherit the Wind, because the other two was just about a court case and a boy growing up, while this was about a teenager ditching school and running off to New York. Also, this book reminded me about the short story, Paul's Case, because both the characters abandoned everything to go to New York.

A Midsummer Night's Dream was probably the favorite book because it was funny and easy to follow. I also like how we read most of it in class, and listening to the tapes really helped. I thought the plot of the play was really funny and interesting, how the four lovers' love is all tangled up. Then I liked how Oberon simply used the flowers to fix everything. I also liked the fact that this book ended on a high note, because the endings for My Antonia and The Catcher in the Rye weren't the happiest endings.

The most recent book we read, First They Killed My Father, was a well written book, but it was very depressing. Like David and Oleg said, the title was very misleading, and I thought her dad would die right at the beginning of the story. So I was just waiting for her dad to die, and in the middle of the book when he actually did, I was saying.. "finally!" rather than being sad. This book also gave me insight on genocide and how Loung felt as each bad thing happened to her.
