Hi Miss Berdick :-)

Hmmm....

"The right to think."

I've never really thought about anyone's right to think. But when I do think about our rights, I realize that even if we people have the right to think, we still are affected by everything around us like our environment, or peers, or even our parents. All these interferences are what cause us to not really have our own mind. Sometimes, if I think about it, some schools really don't want kids to have their own thoughts unless they are similar to the way everyone else thinks. Normally, if they are different, some people think that the person's going rouge or becoming a delinquent.

In the book, Inherit the Wind, the way that the school teaches religion totally strips all the kids of their rights to think and I make a bet that if a student was to just simply ask, "is there really a god up there", then I'm pretty sure that the kid would probably be lectured or scorned. Eventually, these kids minds will start to think only what the schools and churches want them to think and then leading kids to basically lose their rights to think.

Oh, and to emphasize my point earlier about how environment, peers, or parents can affect a person's thought that would eventually make their thoughts not theirs anymore, and THEREFORE not allowing to have really a right to think for themselves or FOR themselves, I'll give an example. Like for kids who have overly bearing parents, say a child was to say an opinion and then their parent, or parents, were to hit them. This would probably lead the kid to thinking that if he/she were to think wrong then they would probably not want to think "out of the line". This eventually will technically take away that child's thoughts and really their RIGHT to think.

Another example would be how when a child lives in an environment where it would lead the child to gain scars mentally and physically, this could lead the kid to think negatively or in an evil matter. This could either lead thoughts of negative things which could sometimes lead to murder, drug abuse, gangs, suicide, etc. where the child would be involved or be the lead problem. Therefore, environment can really affect thoughts. Plus, this could all also be caused by fellow peers.

"The right to think". :-)
