Writer's Week

Monday: At first, Julie Halpern seemed like an upbeat all around cool person. Yet, when she started sharing notes of her past it seemed like she totally grew up. The way that she spoke about being apart of the nerd herd proved that what she had to say was true. I loved that she had made the power point but at times it seemed a little unnecessary. Like Mary Fons, who I saw first period, she didn't have plans to become a writer and that was absolutely awe-inspiring. The one thing I didn't supremely enjoy about her was that she seemed almost too different from her former self. However it was quite cute that she married someone she met at a zene party. Overall, she was a great start to Writer's Week

Tuesday: Tuesday was a student day, which are not my favorites. This student period was pretty good, I must say. My favorite was Jonathan because it was a very interesting true story that was funny as well. Then I'd probably say Alaina because hers was very adorable. Then most likely Unser. The reason I placed Unser 3rd versus most people who would probably place him first is because it was ridiculously inappropriate for a special-occasion speech (his event). I've seen SOS's and he might have a big personality but a lot of that comes form his head.

Wednesday: Oh my goodness, I love Sierra! she was personable and funny, although her poetry was a bit morbid. How she said her words made us students pay attention to each syllable. One thing that somewhat bothered me was that she would take a thirty second pause before each poem, unlike Buddy Wakefield (who I saw later that day) who went right into his poems. Also, she didn't relate herself to us which put her on a sort of pedestal. I thought that it was very cool that she took actual events then changed the perspective and wrote that poem. Also, she was great as reading. She didn't just say her poems, she somewhat became her poems. She would vary both her speed and dynamics, yet she didn't make her poems all choppy like the typical performance poet.

Thursday: Oh the dreaded music day. Let me just say that it was very interesting. I will support Maggie because she's my friend and I know that she's better than others but that top of my list must go to Hannah because she's just plain awesome. I've seen her OC many times before but there's nothing like when the bell rings and no one gets up. That's just about the greatest applause a person can receive. To the kid who played his iPad: you looked like you were going to be awesome, but you ended up not doing too hot. Daniel was funny with his white boy rap but half the time I couldn't even hear him. Plus, he had a lot of issues up in the tech booth.

Friday: Also know as my least favorite day of Writer's Week because it's over. I will say that I did not enjoy Billy Lombardo. Maybe I wasn't focused or I just wasn't interested but when he read his work I was just thinking "snore fest." However, when he talked about his own life the air got a little lighter and his face was a little brighter. Some people told me that they loved him, but I have to say that he was not one of my favorites.

In general, Writer's Week is my favorite week of the year. This year was no different. Sure I didn't eat much in the way of lunch, but I did have the chance to see some pretty great writers. Every year I wish that I could go every period, but I'm just happy that we have Writer's Week. My favorite student presenter would be Emily Prescott because she wrote a humorous essay about the different types of nerds that made me laugh so hard I wanted to cry. My favorite presenter then would either be Buddy Wakefield or Sierra DeMulder. They were both incredibly talented and easily interacted with their audiences. As far as next year goes I'm totally applying. Whether it's with a speech that I wrote for speech team, a few poems, or a short story about a coyote and a banjo, I really want to present.
