Day 1 - Julie Halpern
I thought it was cool how she just naturally liked to right and she thought it was fun, if I could do that it would make English class a lot easier. I also got a connection with her to Willa Cather because she wrote about mostly real things that happened to her but added some fiction so it was not a biography or anything. I also thought it was interesting how she hand-writes all of her novels and stories, especially in this day and age that is ruled by technology. I could tell that she was very comfortable with herself since she told us about how she used to be overweight and down on herself all the time and suffered through depression bad enough to have to go to a mental hospital.
Day 2 - Students
Tamar Alexanian - That takes a lot of courage to go up in front of 500 people and tell people about a falling out that she is still coping with, and I can't even imagine what it would be like if the two people involved in the story were in the audience when she read it.
Nakendra Currie - I liked how she got such a deep meaning across in very short poems with only a few lines.
Colleen Francis - All I know is that I wish I knew what VAMP was so I could understand what she was talking about.
Jonathan Stoller-Schoff - I really liked his story, how often does a person get to meet a professional bird caller? Especially that works for Disney. I like stories like that that are narratives about a short experience and spend a lot of time poking fun at the people involved.
Unser Ahmed - I enjoyed his energy up on stage and one could tell he was comfortable and in his own element.
Day 3 - Sierra DeMulder
The one poem about people being pro-anorexia was just preposterous, I mean the poem was good but I don't understand how anyone could enjoy being anorexic. Her poems were very good and told about causes she really believed in and cared for but I am more of a fan of happy pieces of writing. When I hear terrible stories, like the one about Matthew Shephard, it's hard to understand how that actually happens and how horrible people can be.
Day 4 - Students
The first three girls I thought were all trying to get the same message across, and reminded me of Taylor Swift and it was all things that I had heard before.
The two guys did similar raps and they were good, however they didn't put themselves into and move with the music they just kind of stood still and told a poem with music going on behind them. They didn't work with the beat they just worked over it.
I really enjoyed Hannah Lee's performance's, the first song she did was sort of bluesy and that's not something we hear very often anymore. It also had a light meaning and wasn't overbearing and sad. Her comedy skit was hilarious and she did a great impression of a stereotypical black woman. She also made fun of stereotypes of her ethnicity with her ending joke.
Day 5 - Billy Lombardo
I'm sorry to say this but this was my least favorite day of the week. For the first half he just described baseball and I am not too into baseball and I didn't really care for the pieces he read. The excerpts were also very long and he spent a lot of time reading his book, instead of talking to the audience. The second half of his performance was better because he talked about things other than baseball.
I always enjoy Writer's Week when it comes around because it shows me what real professional writers do and how many different types of writing there are. When someone says writer I automatically think they just write novels all the time and it's super boring but through Writer's Week it proved to be otherwise. It always seems to amaze me how our high school can reel in big name authors and famous poets from all over the country. I just wish I could have been able to go during my other classes to see more people.
