Writers Week Fun!

Monday- I enjoyed Julie Halpern a lot because she did a very good job at being relatable but still informing us about her journey as a writer. She was fearless infront of us and it felt very comfortable talking about her expiriences during her life at a mental hospital and her run in with the police. I have read get well soon and it was really cool to hear her talk about her book. It was also fascinating to understand that her books came from real stories and how she pulled inspiration from her life which creates a good book with meaning.

Tuesday- Overall, I though that the group of writers was pretty decent. My favorites of the day were ,of course, Unser and Alaina. Unser was obviously hilarious while still talking about a topic prevelant to society today. I found it was a good way for him to bring up the topic of too much texting and not being able to communicate one-on-one. He really influenced me to think about jhow much i text and use facebook. I also enjoyed Alaina talking about her childhood dream about being a princess and using her imagination. I liked it because I could relate to it because I also wanted to be a princess when I was little. I wasn't a big fan of Nakendra because her poems were a little to short to get the full meaning and I wish her poems had one fluid theme throughout. They seemed too different from each other.

Wednesday- I absolutely loved Sierra DeMulder because she was funny and personable. I used to hate poetry but now i enjoy it a ton because of her. She made it seem easy and easy to listen too. She made it not boring, which I usually find poetry to be. My favorite poem of hers was the one written in the view of a serial killer. I thought it was an interesting point of view that I wouldn't normally think about using. I really like how she used the line "I'd told you that you can grow up to be anything" or something along those lines and it really brought a whole knew perspective to that line. People use that line all the time for a positive outcome but no one thinks about the negative so i really thought that was interesting. I also like her poem with pro-anorexia and how she said to shave your head and knit her a scarf if you want no hair instead of losing it because of anorexia.

Thursday- I thought it was interesting to listen to the musical side of writers week. There were good and not so good performances. I'll start with the positive. I thought Maggie Dever and Hannah Fox did a very good job at singing. Hannah was interesting because she sang in spanish and english. Maggie did well singing while playing the guitar. My favorite of the day was Hannah Lee. She has a really interesting voice and was nice to listen too. An additive bonus is that she was really funny for her skit. I wasn't to fond of Davy and Dan. I'm not a fan of rap in general so I didn't find it that appeasing. I thought Davy's way of producing the song on his iPad was very cool but I didn't like the rap aspect of the songs.

Friday- I didn't like Billy Lombardo. He was a little jumpy and kept stumbling on words. I know it's writers week and not performers week but because he kept messing up it took away from his words. I am not a fan of reading about baseball so I didn't enjoy his exerpt from his novel about baseball. The only good part about him was that he did a good job of describing scenes and scenarios. It provided vivid imagery. I overall didn't enjoy this period.

Overall Week- Writers Week taught me a ton! it taught me to overcome my fear of people judging my writing and just go with it because it is a fun thing to do and people will probably end up liking it too. I also learned that Writers Week is a good way to get rid of the fear of speaking infront of a crowd. I also enjoyed this week because I learned about slam poetry. I never knew what it was until I saw Sierra DeMulder. She really taught me about poetry and to enjoy it. She also taught me to try new perspectives while writing a story because different perspectives always have different ways to tell a story. Writers Week also exposed me to many new types of literature that we do not get exposed to during the school day. I also enjoyed the fact that there are so many talented writers at Fremd. I learned that people who I wouldnt' have expected to be good writers were actually amazing writers. I feel were are lucky to have writers week because it gives writers a "field to play on" and have the whole school watch and listen just like a football game gives the football players to show their talents. We are extremely lucky to have a whole week of displaying writers talents because some schools dont have anything like this.
