Books 1st semester oh yeah

Catcher in the Rye
I loved this book. I found myself somewhat relatable to Holden Cualfield. I feel a connection to my sister much like he did. I wish like he does that I could protect the innocence of children. I wish we read a lot more books like this. I also loved the image of New York before electronics. It seemed nice how Holden did not have a cell phone to text everybody.

First they Killed My Father
I felt bad for Loung Ung but the book did not make me sad. I was very impressed by Loung's ablility to survive and use her experience for good as with the Landmine organization thingy. However her voice in the book did not sound like a child's as I think it should've. I noticed she seemed to lack certain human emotions like sympathy. I feel as if Loung is a better speaker than a writer after seeing her at writer's week last year.

My Antonia
First though upon completing the first chapter: When will this end? I hated this book. I did not like the minute details Cather included in this story or the apparent lack of a set plot. It seems to reflect more of Cather's life then a story. This book bored me to sleep. TWICE. I understand that the class should read it to understand the American Fronteir and the struggles of American Immigrants, however I could not keep focus during this book. I did like how word play was used with names like Lena Lingard was supposed to be like Lena lingers.

A Midsummer Night's Dream
I did not expect Shakespeare to by funny. While I did notlaugh out loud I did apreciate his puns and mockery of Bottom. The story seemed to be enchanting and more for the Romantic Era then Elizabethan. The emotions of the Characters change a little to rapidly and there was no confused area between anger and happiness. Shakespeare's work still lasts because it was well written and ahead of his time. I was impressed by the Iambic Pentameter throughout the play.

Inherit the Wind
I wish the author used the real names instead of names like Drummund and Brown. While the plot was entertaining and meaningful it seemed forced and it was taken from reality. It was clever to add Reachel Brown into the play because she represented a person who could be persuaded to either side of the arguement. The trial seemed to short to be the Scopes monkey trial and the Journalist (I think hornbeck) had too much of an impact on the play as a whole.
