In today, in the United States, the right to think is granted. But it tends to be discouraged. Firstly in the obvious sense that if you speak out against a generally accepted idea you will be ridiculed and given nasty glares by grannies. Secondly in that you really have better things to do than be a drop in the ocean saying crazy ideas - leave it to the radicals! Thirdly, you're constantly being bombarded by distractions. And that'd be the not-so-obvious point I'm going to write about (briefly).
Okay, so, un-distract for me for a second. Think. Shut out any pressing matters. Now: how often do you actually do this? For 5 minutes before you go to sleep? 2 seconds between crunching cereal? It's amazing that with the amount of leisure the average American is subject to, how little he or she will reflect upon deeper thoughts. Like, hey, do I believe in Darwin or the Bible? Ah, who cares, Lost is on (I hope that show gets forever lost in oblivion)... The American society is based upon ignorance and just letting the government steer them like sheep towards its objective. Which may or may not be for the good of the people. I mean really! Do you read the news? Do you stay up to date on current events? Do you research the topic from different standpoints? Of course not. You're too busy. Work, school, 'leisure.' Who cares about the big picture, you're so wound up in small details you can't unwind.
So there is a right to think available. But it's in small font. No one notices. Hannah Montana's new haircut is taking up the page in big text and shiny headlines.

I feel like this might not be long enough but if I made it any longer I'd be stuffing it with pointless words (or making it an essay, as I was not instructed to do).
Hey, did anyone else notice we can modify the date and time?
Strange the actual post time was 11:41 P.M.
ReplyDeleteAnd I didn't change it
ReplyDeleteOh, oops. I'm guessing I was supposed to respond to other people's posts within my own instead of using the commenting system kindly implemented by Josh Peterson?
ReplyDeleteI must've spaced out during the 1 hour lecture on how to write a sharable draft and make a blog post.
